Powerful Prayers for Your Family: A Guide for Every Season

If you could give your family one gift that costs nothing, requires no special talent, and has the power to change everything — it would be prayer.

Proverbs 22:6 — "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."

The most important thing you can do for your family is not provide for them, protect them, or even love them well — though all of those matter. The most important thing is to bring them before God consistently, persistently, and with faith.

When you pray for your family, you are:

• Inviting God into your home as the true head of the household
• Building a spiritual covering over people who may not yet know how to pray for themselves
• Partnering with God in His purposes for each person He has entrusted to you

Marriage is a covenant, and it needs to be covered in prayer daily. Here are three areas to pray over your spouse consistently:

Their relationship with God — Pray that they would hunger for God's Word, experience His presence, and grow in faith. A spouse who is close to God is a gift beyond measure.

Their identity and calling — Pray that they would know who they are in Christ, walk confidently in their gifts, and find fulfillment in their purpose.

Their protection — Pray against discouragement, temptation, and the lies the enemy whispers. Pray for wisdom in their work, their relationships, and their decisions.

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up." — Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Whether your children are toddlers or adults, your prayers for them carry weight that nothing else can match.

This is the first and most important prayer. "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise... He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9) Pray this promise over every child in your life.

Psalm 91 is the great protection psalm. Pray it over your children by name. Ask God to station His angels around them, to guard their minds from harmful influences, and to keep them from the snares of the enemy.

Jeremiah 29:11 — "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Pray this over your children's education, friendships, future spouse, and calling.

If you have a child who has walked away from faith, you are not alone. The prayer wall is filled with parents carrying this exact burden. Keep praying. The father in Luke 15 never stopped watching the horizon — and when his son returned, he ran to meet him. God is the same.
